Snow, Geico, and the Brain

Here we go...

1.  We've got lots of snow on the ground, probably 18-24 inches.  We are supposed to get another 6-8 inches overnight and tomorrow.  It never fails to amaze me how when I look back to where I grew up, and we'd get 2, 3 or 4 inches, everything would shut down and school would be canceled.  They still haven't canceled school around here yet.

2.  Did you konw taht the biarn is cablpae of reading wrdos wthuoit too much etrxa tghout as lnog as the fsirt and lsat lttres are the smae and the rest of the lttres are jbmleud up idnsie the frist and lsat ltteres?

3.  You've seen those Geico commericals with the paid celebrities, haven' you?  I thought of a good one for me with my deer accident last week.  I'd be the real person, and the paid celebrity would be, or course, John Elway.  It's go something like this:

Me:  I was driving home late one night, and I was almost home.

John (wearing his Bronco uniform and helmet):  There were two minutes left in the fourth quarter, and I was ready to score a touchdown.

Me:  Suddenly, a deer ran infront of my car, which I avoided, but then another deer hit the side of my car.

John:  I was avoiding tacklers left and right, but suddenly, the pressure was too much, and I was blind-sided by Warren Sapp.

Me:  This was the last thing I needed, but thankfully, Geico returned my call that very night, and the inspector came out two days later.

John:  I was worried we would'nt win the game, but then I realized, we were playing the Cleveland Browns.

Me:  He looked at the damage and wrote me a check right on the spot.  It couldn't have gone smoother.

John:  I ended my career by winning two Super Bowls and becoming the greatest quarterback of all time.

I think it's a pretty good commercial.

A Few Items of Business...

Let's get started....

1.  Went to BBC yesterday to try to recruit some staff members.  On the way back home, about 1/2 mile from our house, a deer ran into the passenger side of our car.  Put a pretty good size dent into the rear passenger door, can't even open it anymore.  Not a great time.

2.  Speaking of great times, went to the Disney World of gas stations yesterday in Clarks Summit, PA.  The gas station is called Sheetz, and it is just a cool place.  It's got all sorts of bright colors, a cafe and snack bar inside that you can actually order food from a touch screen when you pump gas, then go inside and pick it up.  They've got a ton of beverage choices, and a lot of stainless steel borders.  They've made getting gas fun again!  It's a pretty close call between Sheets and Goasis.  There's one of those located on I-71 just before you come to 271 if you are heading north.  That's pretty cool too.

3.  I really hope the Patriots lose.  I like Peyton Manning and Tony Dungy.

4.  I feel a whole lot dumber after hearing how people did in that state geography quiz a couple of posts ago.  I actually thought 43 was pretty good, but I've heard from at least half a dozen people who at least got 48 or higher.

5.  Had the best wings in the world yesterday for lunch at Damon's.  That's right, the best in the world.

6.  Listened to Bebo Norman on the trip, there isn't one song on his cd that I wanted to skip past.  Truly great.  A very calm and uplifting cd.

That's all for now....

Red Lobster, October Sky, and other ramblings...

Went to Red Lobster yesterday.  Let's just say I wouldn't pick Red Lobster to eat if it was my birthday.  Not my favorite.  Carrie likes it, b/c she likes to get the shrimp.  To me, shrimp has no taste.  If I wanted to eat shrimp, I'd just chew on a rubber band.  Anyway, we'd gotten a gift card for Red Lobster, so we took a little time during our weekly trip to town for groceries to eat there for lunch.  Why is this significant, you might ask?  During the course of the lunch, a waitress at the next table over dropped a thing of cocktail sauce and it splashed all over my shirt, causing her much embarassment.  It didn't really bother me, I knew it was an accident, and the place was somewhat crowded, so I didn't want to embarass her further.  A few minutes later they came back with a wet cloth so I could wipe my shirt off, and said they would discount my meal.  They took 25% off the check, the employee discount the receipt said, which amounted to about $4.  That was a nice thing for them to do, but the more I thought about it after I left, I realized they probably didn't do more b/c they would have needed a manager approval, and they probably didn't want to tell their manager unless I was going to make a bigger fuss about it.

October Sky is one of my favorite movies.  It was released in 1999, so it's been a little while ago.  I watched it again yesterday, and the ending always makes me get very emotional.  One of the few movies I could count on one hand that are guaranteed to make me cry.  October Sky, Cast Away (where he loses Wilson), Where the Red Fern Grows, Tuesdays with Morrie.  Those are guaranteed, you never know with some of the other ones.  I'm not afraid to admit it.

What is it with parking lots and drivers?  During the aforementioned trip to town yesterday, there were two seperate occassions where I had to slam on the brakes or would have had a fender-bender.  I was traveling down the lane in one, and another car was cutting across the rows and cut right in front of me.  The second one was me, again traveling down the lane, and another car came whipping around the end of the cars trying to turn down my lane but wasn't really watching.

Really wanted the Chargers to win.  Can't stand the Patriots.  If Belichick is so good, why was Cleveland so bad when he was there?

What am I supposed to write?

I guess I'll join the millions of Xanga users who start their posts with some form of this line: "Whoa, it's been a long time since I've posted!" or "I've been so busy, I haven't had time to write." or "Nothing really exciting is happening in my life, so I don't have much to say."

None of those phrases are true in my case, just thought I'd join in the fun.

We finally have some snow at camp, probably between 13-17 inches.  Let's hope it stays, we desperately need it for our retreat groups coming into the camp.  The sky is blue outside my window right now, and with the snow, that makes for a realy cool picture.

Ohio State looked completely overmatched on Monday night.  I'm not going to say they were over-rated, and there were certainly a number of factors before the game even started that didn't help Ohio State, but they just didn't come to play.  Maybe reading too much of their own press?

Have you ever noticed that when you look for an address or directions while driving, you turn the radio down?  Why is that?

Monk may be my favorite tv show of all time.

Here's a game for you to try:  http://www.addictinggames.com/50states.html

Try it out, then report back here on how you did.  I got 43 perfect out of 51, with a 0 avg. mile error

Bethany Camp Staff Retreat '06

Attention all former and current staff members of Bethany Camp, including any potential counselors out there who may want a chance to visit the camp and meet some of the staff members:

You may have heard or received an e-mail, but we are having a Staff retreat Dec. 26-27.  Brochures were mailed out today, and if you were a staff member here during the '06 Summer, then you were on the mailing list.  If you wouldn't have been on that list, but would like the information, please let me know ASAP, and I'll mail it out to you.  Either leave a comment, or call the camp office.  Thanks!
